On Saturday, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed to have destroyed a significant Ukrainian command center, which was attacked with sea-launched cruise missiles. During a media briefing, the ministry’s spokesman, Lieutenant General Igor Konashenkov, announced that the strike had achieved its goal, but did not provide any information on potential Ukrainian casualties. The attack occurred amid an escalation in long-range attacks by both sides in the ongoing conflict, which has been ongoing since February 2022. Earlier this week, Russia targeted Ukrainian military reserves with a barrage of cruise missiles, successfully thwarting their redeployment to the frontline, according to the Russian military.
On Sunday, Russia claimed that it had destroyed a Ukrainian command post with long-distance sea-based missiles, resulting in the deaths of more than 50 generals and officers. Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials acknowledged that the situation in Sievierodonetsk is difficult, but maintained that it is still under control.
In a video released on Sunday, Igor Konashenkov, the spokesman of the Russian Defense Ministry, stated that the Russian Federation Armed Forces are continuing to launch attacks on military facilities in Ukraine.
A multistory residential building in the central Cherkasy Region’s Ukrainian city of Uman was damaged as a result of the recent attack. It remains unclear what caused the damage as Ukrainian air defense projectiles have previously hit civilian sites. Despite this, Ukrainian officials have blamed Russia for the incident, which reportedly killed over 20 civilians. In retaliation, Ukrainian forces have escalated attacks on residential areas in the Russian city of Donetsk.
According to reports, at 12:30 p.m. local time, high-precision Kalibr sea-based missiles were launched at a Ukrainian command post near the village of Shirokaya Dacha in the Dnepropetrovsk region. The strike was carried out during a working meeting of commanders of the Aleksandriya operational-strategic group. The attack resulted in the deaths of over 50 Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) generals and officers, including those from the General Staff, the Kakhovka group, airborne assault troops, and units operating towards Nikolayev and Zaporozhye. These details were shared by an official who spoke on the matter.
According to recent statements, the offensive towards Sievierodonetsk is progressing successfully, with several units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces reportedly leaving the operation area due to morale and psychological issues, as well as a lack of ammunition and logistical support. However, Ukrainian troops trapped at the Azot chemical plant in the area are still resisting, though the Luhansk armed forces have expressed a willingness to negotiate, according to reports from Russian news agency RIA Novosti.
On the Ukrainian side, an advisor to the Internal Minister Denys Monastyrsky has acknowledged that the situation on the eastern front of Ukraine is difficult, especially in the direction of Sievierodonetsk, but maintains that it is still under control. Russian forces have reportedly been unsuccessful in making progress in key areas over the past day, including failing to make a breakthrough along the Bakhmut-Lisichansk corridor. In the city of Sievierodonetsk, there have been no significant advancements made by Russian forces.
On Friday, the area was subjected to intense shelling that left at least nine civilians dead, destroyed several homes, damaged a local hospital, and killed all occupants of a passenger bus. The recent spate of attacks comes ahead of an anticipated Ukrainian counteroffensive, which has been touted by top officials. Despite concerns over Ukraine’s capabilities voiced by some Western media outlets, President Vladimir Zelensky expressed confidence that the counteroffensive would be successful in reclaiming Ukrainian territories.
